Is having an 'OnlyFans' empowering or undermining feminism?

Updated: Jul 3, 2021

With the recent feminism marches and feminist movement in the forefront of everyone’s social media, it got me thinking of a career more commonly dominated by women.

OnlyFans is a subscription site that lets content creators sell risqué photos of themselves. Creators can lock their content behind a paywall, allowing fans access for a monthly fee or one-off tip. By selling pictures that Celeste Barber would love re-enacting, the average person on the service makes $180 per month.

OnlyFans won’t release data on the gender breakdown of its content creators, however it is a very common hustle for women to make money, even women I know. As a female I recently questioned, do I believe OnlyFans to be empowering for femineity or undermining?

My personal answer is, it’s easy to see both sides. To a degree, it is undermining porn hub which is so unethical and demoralising for women. And therefore, empowering for women as they get to own their body and sell their sexuality as they would prefer.

However, the issues I have with it and wonder to myself, is if men and women had equal pay and opportunities in other jobs, like in the corporate world, would women feel the need to resort to selling cheeky pics of them licking chocolate sensually? (which by the way, is there even a way to eat chocolate sensually? Me licking the bottom of the bowl of melted chocolate is just messy, and not in a good or sexy way…)

In research for this blog, I also asked both my male and female friends what their beliefs on this issue are. There were very interesting responses. Most of my female friends said confidently and without hesitation that, part of feminism is ownership and pride in your body and sexuality and having an OnlyFans allows this. Interestingly, my male friends actually had very different opinions. They believed it furthered a market that objectified women and asked me if I would be pleased if my daughter had an OnlyFans profile. They continued to say, that it is unsafe if you aren’t known on the site because creepy men coerce females into doing raunchy things for a low price.

I don’t know if that’s just classic men being naïve to women issues, or if they were trying to give me a sensitive response because they are talking to a woman about femininity, that if they answer incorrectly, I’ll bite their head off. In the same way they always have to be so sensitive around me when they know I am on my period. I swear to God, men have a dying wish when they ask if a woman is on their period just because a female made a sassy comment. Even if I am, they shouldn’t point it out!

Either way, I am not saying any of my friends have THE correct opinion. I believe and understand most of their points. And no matter what you believe, Celeste Barber has really made the cleverest career for herself. Posting sexy, yet humorous pictures of herself, empowering women to accept their body. They are also pictures that made her worth an easy $450 million dollars. Which if I knew there was that much money in realistic pictures of me, I wouldn’t have deleted half of my camera roll when I was taking my Instagram posts. My deleted camera roll could have been worth millions.

That's my ramble.
